Why is it Important to Get Your Pet Microchipped?

Feb 27 • 1 minute read

Microchipping involves inserting a tiny microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, under your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Once your pet is microchipped, they can be identified throughout their lifetime. If they get lost or stolen, animal shelters, veterinarians, and other animal welfare organizations can scan for the microchip's unique identification number and use it to locate the pet owner.

Here are some of the reasons why microchipping your pet is important:

1. Reunite with Your Lost Pet

One of the main reasons why pet owners opt for microchipping is to increase the chances of reuniting with their lost pets. With a microchip, you don't have to rely on your pet having a collar with identification tags, which can easily get lost or removed. Additionally, if your pet is lost or stolen, it may end up in a shelter or rescue organization where the staff can scan for the microchip and contact you immediately.

2. Proof of Ownership

If you have ever adopted a pet, you may have had to provide proof of ownership. A microchip can help with this. If you ever find yourself in a situation where someone else claims your pet as their own, the microchip can provide definitive proof of ownership.

3. Travel with Your Pet

If you plan on traveling with your pet, you may need to provide proof of vaccination or ownership. A microchip can serve as proof of ownership and can make the travel process smoother. Some countries even require microchipping as a mandatory condition for entry.

4. Save Lives

Microchipping can save lives. Unfortunately, many pets end up in animal shelters where they are at risk of being euthanized if they are not claimed within a certain period. With a microchip, animal shelters can quickly locate the pet owner and reunite them with their lost pet, increasing the chances of survival for the animal.

Microchipping your pet is a small investment that can yield significant returns. If you have not yet microchipped your pet, Rollin’ Vet is here to help. Please call our Houston office at 713-987-3237.
