What Are Those Black Spots On My Dog’s Tongue?

Mar 30 • 1 minute read

The sudden appearance of a black freckle or spot on your dog’s tongue can be worrisome for pet owners. Rest assured, there’s a simple explanation for this very common and normal occurrence.

what causes black spots on a dog’s tongue?

Black spots on a dog’s tongue are simply pigmented skin cells and are usually nothing to worry about. Many breeds, such as Golden Retrievers,  have darker lips and noses — and that pigmentation can also be found on their tongues and gums.

what do black spots on the tongue look like?

These pigmented spots should have the same texture as the rest of your dog’s tongue, however, the skin appears black or blueish. It is completely normal for these spots to change shape and color gradually as the dog ages.

are black spots ever a reason to worry?

9 times out of 10, these pigmented spots are completely normal. However, in the rare case that your dog develops a pigmented spot that starts to change rapidly or if the texture of the spot is raised or different than the rest of the tongue or gum, please give us a call at 713-987-3237.

Additionally, any other colors besides bluish/black and a foul oral odor can be causes for concern, as they could be signs of a more serious health issue.
